About the Volunteer Opportunity

Cancer Champions Health Promotion Volunteer
Health Promotion volunteers will help us to share and promote information about the Cancer Champions services and support. It will help us achieve our goal of sharing our cancer support services information to every LGBTQIA+ person affected by cancer throughout Northern Ireland.

Volunteers will support Cancer Champions in promoting the Cancer Champions services, sharing information around Cancer and LGBTQIA+ people, such as myth busting information, and to promote the Cancer Champions Support available to LGBTQIA+ people affected by Cancer.

What kind of person are we looking for?

This is a Cancer Champions service promotion focused role for someone who is passionate about inclusive healthcare & cancer.
You should be able to, & be comfortable with:
• Talking to people in person
• Promoting LGBTQIA+ healthcare and Cancer support to the community and to healthcare professionals
• Proactively approaching individuals, organisations and healthcare providers to share our service promotion materials and sign post potential service users
• Explaining the purpose of the Cancer Champions service and directing queries to the Cancer Champions team
• Signposting members of the public to self-refer directly to the Cancer Champions team
• Providing sexual health information and safer sex packs as a cancer preventative measure

More about the role
The role will be carried out in all council areas
Tasks include:
• Delivering Cancer Champions resource packs to GP practices and pharmacies, and promoting the service to them
• Setting up, and packing away Cancer Champions health promotion stalls at health and wellbeing events
• Speaking to health and wellbeing events attendees, about the cancer champions service, signposting members of the public to self refer into the Cancer Champions service via project materials.
• Promoting Cancer Champions within the rural and north west communities

• Receive free LGBTQIA+ sector standard training
• Access to a vast array of free Macmillan Cancer Support training
• Eligibility to receive Epic awards for volunteering hours milestones
• Additional training, relevant to your specific volunteer role
• Be part of a double award nominated team
• Be part of a Macmillan excellence awards finalist team
• Receive travel expenses reimbursement
• Regular support from your Volunteer Officer

By volunteering you will play a key part in ensuring the Cancer Champions Project and it’s services are promoted across Northern Ireland.

As a volunteer, you will:
• Know you are helping your local community to access inclusive care which contributes to earlier screenings and diagnoses of cancer
• Gain practical experience of working in local communities
• Learn more about provision of equitable health care for people affected by cancer
• Improve your own well-being and quality of life through contributing to a healthier community
• Be invited to Volunteer events and training
• Be reimbursed for preapproved Travel and out of pocket expenses
• Receive induction, professional training and ongoing support & supervision during your time with us.

About the Organisation

The Rainbow Project Launched Cancer Champions in August 2024 as a pilot project service aiming to empower and Support LGBTQIA+ people impacted by cancer in Northern Ireland.  Delivered by the Rainbow Project and supported by Macmillan Cancer Support, we are proud to be the first dedicated LGBTQIA+ cancer awareness service in Northern Ireland.
