About the Volunteer Opportunity

As a Freshwater Watcher with Ballinderry Rivers Trust, you’ll take part in Earthwatch’s global citizen science programme to help monitor and protect your local freshwater environment. Your role is simple, flexible, and impactful- no scientific background required!

Here’s what you’ll do:

Visit a Local Waterbody- Once a month (or as often as you can), visit a river, stream, or lake in your local area.

Take a Water Sample- Using a free Freshwater Watch kit, you’ll collect a small water sample to test for key indicators like nitrate and phosphate levels- nutrients that can signal pollution or poor water quality.

Make Observations- Record visual observations of the site, such as water clarity, presence of algae, litter, or wildlife.

Submit Your Data- Use the Freshwater Watch app or website to upload your findings, contributing to a global database used by scientists and conservationists to track the health of freshwater systems.

You’ll receive full training from Ballinderry Rivers Trust on how to carry out the tests and use the online platform. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy time outdoors, learn new skills, and play an important part in protecting your local rivers and lakes.
