About the Volunteer Opportunity

On the first Sunday of every month from 2-4pm BTO (NI) run a Wildlife Wander event in Cookstown.

The Wildlife Wanders are relaxed walks in nature in a friendly group, with people of all ages welcoming new people to come and explore their local wildlife. Together the group learns about the varied nature on our doorsteps, develops skills in wildlife identification, and contributes to local biodiversity recording. These are great opportunities to spend time outside with a lovely bunch of people, enjoying the personal wellbeing benefits of being in nature and meeting like-minded folk, as well as developing skills for further nature volunteering.

The Wildlife Wanders are run by local volunteers and held at Cabin Wood at the south end of Cookstown, which is a beautiful wee gem of a woodland that is full of wildlife.

They are looking for people who would like to join the Wildlife Wanders to explore and learn about nature with the group, volunteering by recording the wildlife that the group finds. They are also looking for people who would like to join the team of local volunteers to facilitate the events – these volunteers are friendly and welcoming people who enjoy learning about wildlife with others (being a nature expert is definitely not required!).

The Wildlife Wander events themselves are training in wildlife skills in an encouraging and fun environment. For the volunteers facilitating the Wildlife Wanders, we provide additional training outside of the Wildlife Wander events, plus ongoing support and regular contact with our staff.

About the Organisation

British Trust for Ornithology is a charity that seeks to inspire people to learn about birds, to help us to monitor our bird populations for conservation. We want to welcome more people into our community of people looking out for their local nature. Whether you’re new to birdwatching or more experienced, we provide opportunities to learn about and explore local wildlife and meet like-minded people along the way.
